Fifty years is a long time in an individual life but a short time in the life of a nation.

Fifty years ago Monday, on March 19, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Greenwood for the last time, just a little over two weeks before an assassin’s bullet killed him in Memphis on April 4.

Delta storytellers

Two authors with Greenwood ties and new novels set in the Delta will be in town this week to talk about their work.

Tiffany Quay Tyson, a native Mississippian who worked briefly as a reporter at the Commonwealth in 1999, has a new book, “The Past is Never,” set in a fictional town loosely modeled on Greenwood.

The Wilson Banking Co. building’s distinctive entryway cuts diagonally across the corner of Howard and Market streets in downtown Greenwood. The building will become home to a new branch of Guaranty Bank & Trust Co. of Mississippi in the coming months.

Guaranty Bank to occupy historic downtown building

Guaranty Bank and Trust Co. of Mississippi will be a new tenant in downtown Greenwood, occupying the historic Wilson Banking Co. building on Howard Street.

A late afternoon gathering on Thursday, sponsored by Powers Properties and Main Street Greenwood, welcomed the bank branch and its staff to town.

Activist Meredith to speak at MVSU

Activist, author and legendary Mississippian James Meredith will deliver the keynote address Thursday at Mississippi Valley State University’s 2018 Honors Convocation.

The event will take place at 11 a.m. in the Walter Roberts Auditorium of the H.G. Carpenter Building on the Valley campus.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
