Leflore 70th in health index

Leflore County ranks 70th out of 82 Mississippi counties rated in the latest County Health Rankings and Roadmaps index, published each year by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Meanwhile, next door, Carroll County ranked 14th in the state, rising from 22nd in 2017.

Municipal officials invited to workshop

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson is hosting a workshop later this month to help educate municipal officials about federal re-sources they can tap into.

“Congressman Thompson hosted a similar workshop for counties back in 2016,” said Stephanie Booker, a field representative for the Democratic lawmaker who represents the state’s 2nd District.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
