Mississippi Valley State University enjoys a special relationship with the next state commissioner of higher education, Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr.

A native of Greenville, Rankins graduated from one of Mississippi’s historically black universities, Alcorn State University, and both of his parents were Valley grads.

WABG-TV, general mgr. part ways

WABG-TV has parted ways with its general manager and news director, Gavin Maliska.

Maliska took the position in August of 2016 when WABG, the ABC affiliate, was bought by Cala Broadcast Partners LLC, a media organization with owners in Michigan and Los Angeles.

He made his home in Greenwood.

Improving schools to receive cash

Mississippi public schools that improved their state accountability ratings in 2017 will receive later this year cash incentive payments approved by the Legislature, according to Sen. David Jordan.

“They should receive the money some time after July 1, when the new fiscal year begins,” the Greenwood Democrat said.
