Sunflower County cities prefer Leflore County Jail

Some officials in Sunflower County are upset that two of its municipalities are taking the people they arrest to the jail in Leflore County rather than the one in Sunflower County.

Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks confirmed that in recent months his jail has started getting more inmates from Indianola than in years before.

Valley’s 21st annual conference on the subject “STEM Chasers: Raising the Next Generation of Women in Science and Technology” will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the William Sutton Administration Building on campus.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
