A musical afternoon at Greenwood’s Episcopal Church of the Nativity on Wednesday was also a celebration of a Carrollton student’s future as a dedicated music student.

Trees felled by wind

It was a dark and stormy night. And windy.

A storm system moving through Greenwood and Leflore County at around 7:30 Tuesday evening left large trees down in several areas, with a concentration of activity at the busy intersection of Park Avenue and Grand Boulevard.

No injuries were reported.

City to aid in memorial event for crash victims

The Greenwood City Council has agreed to make a still-to-be-determined financial contribution to support an event in July to memorialize the 16 members of the military who were killed last summer in a plane crash in western Leflore County.

Charges added in fatal shooting

Charges have been added against a Greenwood man accused of killing a 19-year-old adversary in a shootout over the weekend.

In addition to a murder charge, Quandarius Dewuan Silas, 22, 200 3rd Ave. North, has also been charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling and with five counts of aggravated assault.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
