The Greenwood Mentoring Group might be nurturing a rocket scientist or two in its upcoming Summer of Learning program.

The five-week session for students in grades 1-6 starts on Monday at the Mentoring Center, 124 Ave. G, and will focus on math and reading enrichment, with a science and math concentration.

Board member selection method may change soon

The method of appointing Greenwood Leflore Hospital’s five board members may soon change if the Greenwood City Council and the Leflore County Board of Supervisors can agree with an attorney general’s opinion issued on April 20.

Zane Hodge is seen after last year’s Chicot Challenge when he swam 23.5 miles over 16 straight hours. This year’s event commences this Saturday on Lake Chicot and is a fundraiser for the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi. Donations can be made online or mailed to Hodge or the foundation. The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
