Chief praises firefighters’ work containing blaze

Greenwood Fire Chief Marcus Banks says his firefighters did a stellar job containing a blaze in South Greenwood early Saturday morning that destroyed one structure completely and damaged five others, one irreparably.

“The response time was prompt, and they made some quick decisions,” Banks said. “I really commend the guys.”

The Mississippi State Supreme Court District 3, Place 1 seat is open this year as Justice Ann Lamar of Senatobia steps down. And at the Mississippi Court of Appeals, Place 2, a Delta lawyer is challenging the incumbent.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
