Despite $19.7 million in overall budget cuts for the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, local services will not be cut, at least not for now, according to the department’s executive director.

Diana Mikula spoke Wednesday night at a meeting of the Greenwood Voters League.

Chris Cole of Greenville stopped off Monday to donate two artifacts to the Mississippi Heritage Wildlife Museum in Leland: an antique crosscut saw from his grandfather’s barn and this skull from a wild boar he killed in the forest nearby. The hog weighed around 350 pounds, Cole estimated.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
