Holiday brings excitement, concern

Pulling in a U-Haul filled with another delivery of fireworks, David Elmore, owner of the Black Cat tent off U.S. 82, said business is booming.

The fireworks salesman does not know exactly why business is so amazing this year, but he has a theory.

School board approves 1 of 7 bids on 16th Section land

The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District officially opened land bidding for available 16th Section land areas Wednesday.

Mike Ainsworth, 16th Section land manager for the district, presented the opening bids for the seven properties, totaling more than 1,400 acres, that were up for lease.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
