It’s shaping up to be a very merry 150th birthday for Leflore County.
Perhaps there won’t be a cake and candles, but the county will be opening a gift — one it gave itself 50 years ago.
A time capsule buried in the courthouse lawn will be unearthed at 2 p.m. Monday in observance of the county’s sesquicentennial.

North Carrollton infrastructure projects begin

Construction is underway on the replacement of manholes and sewer lines in North Carrollton.
This is the first of two infrastructure improvement projects involving drainage for which the city was awarded funds, according to North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan.

Schools' virus numbers very low

There evidently have been no signficant numbers of COVID-19 at local schools, although some of the schools are absent from recent reports.
Since mid-September, the Mississippi State Department of Health has been releasing the numbers of coronavirus cases and exposures among staff and students.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
