Carolyn Mack-Burks never saw herself as a store owner, but as she sits in the Delta Emporium & Events store on East Johnson Street, that clearly has changed.

Mack-Burks, 52, grew up in Schlater and attended Amanda Elzy High School before earning a degree in social work at Mississippi Valley State University.

Board debates GLH ambulance service

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors is again wanting Greenwood Leflore Hospital to reconsider the ambulance service it uses.

Reginald Moore, the president of the county board, said Monday he would be contacting the hospital to see if it would switch from MedStat to Pafford EMS, as the county did last year.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
