Temps expected to hit 10-year lows

In the coming days, Greenwood is expected to face its lowest temperatures in the last 10 years.

According to Janae Elkins, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, the kind of extreme cold expected from this weekend into early next week hasn’t happened since February 2011.

Cold front ahead; snow, ice may follow

The National Weather Service says there’s a chance of bitter cold weather this weekend.

Joanne Culin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Jackson, said a cold air mass will make its way across Leflore County and the neighboring areas.

Drake’s BBQ honored in US House

Drake’s BBQ in Greenwood has been recognized by U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson in the nation’s capital.

On Thursday, Kendrell and Shulundia Drake, owners of the barbecue restaurant in the Village Shopping Center, were presented with a Congressional Record recognizing them as an outstanding part of the community.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
