School district to seek grant

Time capsule to be opened April 26

A time capsule buried near the Confederate monument at the Leflore County Courthouse 50 years ago will be unearthed April 26 as part of the observance of Leflore County’s 150th birthday.
Two canisters, each holding items placed by county residents, were buried in 1971 as part of the commemoration of the county’s centennial.

Woman sues over fall at grocery store

A Greenwood woman has filed a lawsuit against the Save-A-Lot grocery store on Park Avenue, saying she slipped and fell in hot sauce there last June.
According to the suit filed in Leflore County Circuit Court, Mary Banks is asking for $100,000 in compensatory damages and attorney fees.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
