Flooding alters plans for Stars & Stripes

There will be no festival, just fireworks, at Greenwood’s annual Fourth of July celebration.
Due to flooding at the normal venue for the Stars & Stripes Festival, the plans have been altered.

Floodwaters recede; residents shaken

Hours after floodwaters forced the evacuation Friday of scores of residents in Leflore County, the waters began to recede.
Leflore County Supervisor Robert Collins said the water was slowly coming down in the Glendale subdivision, site of the worst flooding, as well as in adjacent neighborhoods east of Greenwood.

Cox awaiting certification of election totals

Greenwood mayoral challenger Kenderick Cox says he is waiting until Tuesday’s election is certified before he decides on his next move.
“I will just see how the chips fall during that time,” Cox said Friday.
Cox, a Democrat, finished 92 votes behind incumbent Carolyn McAdams in the final but unofficial results.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.
