Greenwood High School is adding a civil and human rights element to its curriculum as part of a statewide pilot program.

Under a 2007 law, the state Board of Education must provide school districts with more opportunities for such education. This year, 28 districts statewide, including Greenwood, are implementing the pilot program.

Comedian to bring show to Civic Center

Radio host and comedian Rickey Smiley will perform at the Leflore County Civic Center on Saturday.

Smiley, whose morning show airs locally on WGNL 104.3, will perform a live show of “Rickey Smiley and Friends,” with guests including Special K, Ced Delaney and Lavar.

1 woman dies, 1 hurt in accident

One Greenwood woman is dead and another in the hospital after a crash on Interstate 55 in Holmes County Wednesday morning.

Anna Prophet, 61, and Margaret Cochran, 70, both of Greenwood, were traveling south on Interstate 55 shortly after 9 a.m. when Prophet lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
