Display honors Christmas, troops

An unoccupied chair, with a flag draped over it’s back, sits in a building in downtown Greenwood in honor of troops serving overseas.

Charles and Janet Spain of Charles Spain Auto put together an elaborate Christmas display along with a homage to the troops, every year in their downtown shop.

Last-minute shoppers storm stores

Despite the economy, some area retailers said that Santa has treated their businesses well this year.

According to Consumer Reports, 40 percent of the nation have put off Christmas shopping until the final week leading into the holiday. Greenwood stores said they have seen the rush over the past few days.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
