Fireworks can be fun, dangerous

The Delta skies will be ablaze with an assortment of rockets, artillery shells and other fireworks at midnight as Leflore County cracks off the year 2010.

Peggy Jo Tanksley, a fireworks stand owner in Leflore County, said she has been seeing a lot of business and expects to see it increase right up until midnight.

Leflore officials move to remove old Ag Center

County officials are in the process of removing the old Leflore County Ag Center, which has frequently had trouble with fire.

Two fires in the building, one Saturday and another Sunday, were reported to the Greenwood Fire Department. Chief Larry Griggs, said the building has frequently been targeted for mischief.

Courts may get more digital

The Leflore County Courthouse may soon go a little more digital.

The Board of Supervisors voted to allow the county to proceed in drawing up a contract with nCourt. The company will provide a means to pay tickets and fines of the Justice Court online.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
