Rally to urge residents to be counted in census

A rally will be held from 12:15 to 1 p.m. Thursday on the Leflore County Courthouse steps to educate citizens about the 2010 U.S. Census.

With the census process well under way, the Greenwood Leflore Complete Count Committee is pushing for more participation from county residents.

MEC: Education helps economy

Investing in children now is an investment in tomorrow’s workforce, the state’s chamber of commerce says.

The Mississippi Economic Council is taking that message to Greenwood Thursday as part of its 10-city Next Steps Tour.

Refreshments begin at 3:30 p.m., and the program starts at 4 at The Alluvian.

County prepares for tornado season

As tornado season approaches, Leflore County officials say they are preparing as much as they can to alert residents in case of an emergency.

Recently it was reported that one-third of the emergency sirens in Hinds County did not function. In Leflore County, that shouldn’t be an issue, County Administrator Sam Abraham said.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
