Man held woman hostage, police say

A Greenwood man arrested Friday after a three-hour standoff was still jailed this morning, accused of holding a handcuffed woman hostage in his home.

Todd Berry, 715 W. Church St., was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, unnatural intercourse and sexual assault, according to police records.

Pillow’s Pilgreen races to 2 titles

Jim Tom Pilgreen, a Pillow Academy senior, won two state titles at the MAIS AAA state track and field meet on Saturday at Mississippi College in Clinton.

Pilgreen’s double wins in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes were the Mustangs’ only wins at the meet, which was mostly dominated by Jackson Prep and Jackson Academy.

Pepper spraying under investigation

David Bell said his eyes were still burning Friday afternoon after they were blasted with pepper spray Wednesday.

Bell, 21, is a junior at Mississippi Valley State University from Chicago. He said he was walking past an altercation between several females on campus when an MVSU police officer sprayed him with pepper spray.

Star student remains humble

Despite his personal success, Ivory Johnson says it’s all about the team when he competes.

Johnson, 24, a Mississippi Valley State University senior, recently made history in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge with the highest individual score ever at the academic competition. He’s also a member of the university’s mock trial team.
