State Sen. David Jordan stopped by Greenwood Middle School Thursday morning to explain the legislative process and to encourage young students.

About 200 students gathered in the gym to listen to Jordan speak about how the Legislature works and what students need to do to be successful.

Students get look at appeals court

For the first time, Mississippi Valley State University hosted the Mississippi Court of Appeals on its Itta Bena campus Thursday afternoon.

The judges visit several college campuses to hear oral arguments in a setting where students and the public can easily attend and view the judicial process.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
