Icy roads challenge food sellers, providers

Some folks have been driving to Greenwood from out of town to buy food because meat and dairy counters where they live are poorly supplied, likely due to issues related to icy roads.

Thawing is under way

An anticipated thaw across Leflore County began by midday Wednesday as sun-flooded skies helped to melt ice on roofs, streets, sidewalks and parking lots.
Furthermore, damage from a freeze that began Sunday seemed to have been comparatively mild, although the ongoing freeze dropped low temperatures into the single digits at midweek.

Slick roads cause worries

People are keeping their fingers crossed that Sunday and Monday’s nasty weather will get better soon, at least by Wednesday.
That is when the National Weather Service in Jackson says the high temperature might reach 43 degrees.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
