‘June Bugs’ to pay tribute to ‘Billy Joe’ song character

It’s going to be a comeback, one might say.
The zany June Bugs, a group composed mainly of lawyers and judges but also including a politician or two and some normal folks, will be in Greenwood Thursday for a second memorial associated with former Greenwoodian Bobbie Gentry’s song “Ode to Billy Joe.”

Pantry director gets sendoff after 14 years

Tommy Ellett, the former Greenwood banker who came out of retirement to run the Community Food Pantry 14 years ago, stepped down Thursday.
So the pantry folks threw a surprise party for him at the pantry, which is on Browning Road, on his final day. At least 25 people showed up, and many were the pantry’s beloved volunteers.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
