Cocaine to cost man 9 years

A Greenwood man received a nine-year sentence in Leflore County Circuit Court Tuesday for possession of cocaine.

Monquaedron Fundrakus Gray, 25, 205 W. McLaurin St., will serve four years in prison and then spend five years on probation.

Road milling work will begin Monday

Road crews will begin milling down street surfaces on Strong Avenue and Chambers Street beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

From those locations the crews will head east toward Fourth Street.

Longtime educator Spears dead at 61

Funeral services for longtime Greenwood educator Carey Spears will be held at noon Saturday at Pleasant Grove East Baptist Church in McComb.

Mr. Spears, 61, died of cancer Wednesday in Little Rock, Ark.

Mr. Spears worked in education for more than 30 years, most of them in Mississippi.

Brasel wins runoff

J.D. Brasel Jr. won Tuesday’s runoff election for the Itta Bena Board of Aldermen, according to unofficial returns.

Brasel received 128 votes, or 57 percent, to challenger Emmitt Riley’s 96 votes or 43 percent.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
