MVSU gets ready for disaster

Police arrest man in attack

A Greenwood man has been charged with aggravated assault in the beating of a man early Saturday morning.

Marvelous Wright, 24, 306 Ave. I, remained in Leflore County Jail this morning.

Deputy Police Chief Johnny Langdon said officers were called to the 200 block of Oak Street at around 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

3rd man charged in shooting

A third Greenwood man has been charged in a July 31 drive-by shooting on U.S. 82.

Perez Love, 28, 105 E. Taft St., has been charged with drive-by shooting. He also faces charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Love was arrested Friday night, said Greenwood Deputy Police Chief Johnny Langdon.

Study shows county growth in college degree percentage

Leflore County has more than doubled the percentage of its adult residents who have college degrees in the past 40 years, a new study shows.

But its rate has not grown as fast as the national average, highlighting problems rural communities have with attracting and keeping educated young people.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
