Former state senator and Musgrove administration chief of staff Bill Renick of Ashland on Jan. 8 became the first Democrat to qualify to seek his party's nomination against incumbent Republican Gov. Haley Barbour in the 2007 general election.

Whe 2007 legislative session picked up about where the 2006 session left off, with the House leadership and the Barbour administration sniping at each other over public education funding.

House Democratic leaders brought bills forward on the first day of the session to fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program.

Has air left 2007 political balloon?

When Gov. Haley Barbour told The Associated Press recently that he expects to sign a Mississippi Adequate Education Program full-funding bill during the 2007 session, it was like the air being let out of a balloon.

The bitterly contentious 2007 legislative session that had been forecast suddenly seemed far less likely.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
