Big Hungry woman found safe after search in snow

CARROLLTON — A Carroll County woman who wandered away from her home in the Big Hungry community was rescued Wednesday night and is unharmed, according to Sheriff Jerry Carver.

Shelly Schalks, 29, left her house and walked about 1½ miles, when she was found by Bobby Grantham, Carroll’s emergency management coordinator.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
