Hearing on rail authority set for Feb. 28

A hearing is scheduled Feb. 28 on a proposal to form a regional rail authority that would include Carroll County.

Grenada Railway LLC plans to do away with its railway from north of Canton to Batesville, attorney Kevin Horan told the Carroll County Board of Supervisors last week.

County to obtain land for Humphrey Highway bridge

VAIDEN — The Carroll County Board of Supervisors voted Monday to proceed with eminent domain litigation if necessary to secure land for a bridge replacement on Humphrey Highway.

The bridge replacement would be about a mile from where the road goes up the hill from the Delta, Chancery Clerk Sugar Mullins said.

Storm clouds cast an ominous blue glow on Grand Boulevard Wednesday night just before 6 p.m. Strong winds blew through the area, prompting a tornado warning for the northern part of Leflore County and setting off emergency sirens. The wind knocked down a carport that then disconnected power lines at 119 Country Club Drive, the home of Bridget Gary. Greenwood firefighters stood by until Greenwood Utilities crews arrived, according to a Fire Department run report. Emergency Management Director T.W. Cooper said there were high winds in Schlater and Sidon but no damage reports.

Carroll woman killed in storm

A Carroll County woman was killed when a tree fell on her during a Wednesday evening storm.

Toni Hood, 52, who lived on County Road 286 in the northern part of the county near Grenada, died when a tree fell on the all-terrain vehicle she was driving.

Students create own ‘Happiness Project’

NORTH CARROLLTON — Inspired by the popular Gretchen Rubin book “The Happiness Project,” juniors and seniors in Jenni Bailey’s English classes at J.Z. George High School have begun their own happiness project.

Bailey said she read Rubin’s book in November and fell in love with it.
