Hathorn building sold to CMI

CARROLLTON — The former Hathorn Elementary School building will once again be used to serve the county’s children.

The Carroll County School agreed Wednesday to sell the vacant building to Central Mississippi Incorporated for use with Head Start programs in Vaiden.

Carroll Academy student wins state contest

CARROLL COUNTY — Last school year, 23,000 Mississippi third-graders took home small cabbage plants in cups to see who could grow the biggest one — and the winner is 9-year-old James Neill of Carroll County.

James’ prize cabbage weighed 26.7 pounds. James is the son of Jim and April Neill.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
