Green moves to George Middle

NORTH CARROLLTON – Coretta Green is the new J.Z. George Middle School principal, a new title but not a new face. Like Principal Glen Stevens, Green was a teacher in the vocational department of George, teaching family and consumer sciences for nine years.

In 2007, Green left George to teach at Oxford High School.

Laura Curry has been principal at Marshall Elementary since 1992. This year she will have to incorporate students and teachers from the recently closed Hathorn Elementary.

Preservation law still alive

CARROLLTON — By a narrow vote Tuesday evening, the Board of Aldermen kept alive a historic preservation ordinance that has been a source of contention in recent months.

A 3-2 vote sent the ordinance to be tailored by a committee of two board members and two historic preservation commission members.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
