Key votes ahead on school bills

With two school consolidation bills that could affect area districts edging forward in the Mississippi Legislature, lawmakers are planning their next moves.

In the coming weeks, state senators will vote on a bill that easily passed in the House and would merge the Greenwood and Leflore County school districts.

Wilson named superintendent

The Greenwood School Board has hired Dr. Jennifer Wilson as the next superintendent of the district.

The board voted unanimously to hire the former interim superintendent and assistant superintendent at a specially called board meeting Friday.

Wilson, who interviewed for the position on Monday, was not present at the meeting.

New space to be good fit for Beard + Riser

Greenwood architectural firm Beard + Riser Design will be moving its offices a few blocks farther down Main Street later this year.

The Greenwood City Council recently voted to sell the building at 324 Main St., formerly a filling station, to the firm for $75,000.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
