An Oklahoma university soon will be offering a scholarship named for a Leflore County native and designated for Leflore County students.

The Melvin Henderson Leflore County Scholarship will be available to those attending Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma.

Main Street seeks preservation aid

Brantley Snipes, executive director of Main Street Greenwood, sought approval for a new building restoration program from the Leflore County Board of Supervisors on Monday.

Snipes said the nonprofit intends to establish a “revolving real estate fund” to refurbish historic buildings in downtown Greenwood.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
