Students raise $1,047 in pennies for foundation

Leflore County Elementary and Leflore County High School raised $1,047 worth of pennies in one month for the Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation.

“It’s teaching kids at an early age about community service, about giving back and supporting community service,” said Freddie White-Johnson, founder and president of the foundation.

Yoga instructor loves her work

Erin Mulligan says she loves what she does.

Mulligan teaches yoga six days a week at The Alluvian’s Studio A, volunteers as a yoga instructor for Life Help’s Denton House and works as a personal chef, where she prepares food for families about five days a week.

Three persons, including an infant, were seriously injured in a fire at a South Greenwood duplex Saturday, according to Fire Chief Marcus Banks.

Kevin Mays, Jennifer Williams and her daughter, Faith Williams, were airlifted to various hospitals after being transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
