Fire at church deemed arson

Last month’s damaging fire of a church near downtown Greenwood was the result of arson, authorities have determined.

Greenwood Fire Marshal Victor Stokes said he could not name a suspect in the June 12 fire at Emmanuel Temple Church of God in Christ, but he said he does suspect who it might be. A motive is under investigation.

Man charged in 1st St. shooting

A Greenwood man has been charged in connection with Tuesday’s shooting on 1st Street that left another man seriously wounded.

Chaddarius Peoples, 19, 1200 Leflore Ave., was charged Thursday evening with aggravated assault with a firearm.

Peoples remained at the Leflore County Jail Friday on a $20,000 bond.

Museum receives grant to help with its ongoing expenses

The Museum of the Mississippi Delta has been awarded a $17,400 state grant to help with its operation.

“We are just delighted to still be receiving funds from the Mississippi Arts Commission,” said Cheryl Thornhill, executive director of the museum. “It really helps us a lot.”

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
