Board debates future of biz incubator

The Leflore County business incubator is operating in the red by more than $50,000, and the Board of Supervisors debated Monday how to turn things around.

Supervisor Robert Moore, one of the main proponents of the incubator’s creation, said it needs to be opened up to nonprofits.

Baptist Town bash

Louis Scales came home from Memphis Saturday for the Baptist Town Community Kids Day.

It was nice, he said, to be back for something positive “instead of for a funeral or something like that.”

“I loved it. I’m glad it came together,” said Scales, who was born and raised in Baptist Town.

Lt. Chris Glass of the Greenwood Fire Department steps away from a home at 312 Palace St. Saturday after pulling a wooden panel off the front of the boarded-up building. Firefighters had just put out a fire at a home only a few yards away at 313 W. Gibbs St. when they noticed smoke coming out of the Palace Street building. Both fires are being investigated as arson.

Firefighters battle back-to-back blazes

Smoke’s smell hit the air again just as Greenwood firefighters finished putting out a fire set by burning rags on Gibbs Street Saturday.

Turns out, another abandoned house was burning only a few yards away on Palace Street.

Fire Inspector William Stanciel says it had to be arson.

Collins: Board now doing job in public

The District 5 supervisor offered to educate attendees of a candidate’s forum sponsored by the Voters League of Itta Bena Thursday night about county government.
