GPD makes historic promotion

Talisha Lewis is following in her mother’s trailblazing footsteps at the Greenwood Police Department.

In the 1970s, her mom, Clara Love, was the city’s first female police officer.

This week, Lewis became the first woman in the department to attain the rank of captain, Chief Henry Purnell announced.

Board ends 2010-11 budget

The Greenwood school board closed out the 2010-2011 budget during a brief special meeting Wednesday afternoon at the district’s central office.

The meeting was required because state law calls for the board to pass a final budget before Oct. 15, and the district has its fall break next week, pushing back its normal monthly meeting.

Would-be voters face Sat. deadline

Saturday is the deadline to register to vote for the Nov. 8 general election.

Circuit clerk’s offices statewide will be open from 8 a.m. to noon, and mail-in voter registration forms must be postmarked by Saturday.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
