Board elects Ellis its new president

The new president of the Greenwood School Board promised “fair, honest and effective” leadership after being elected Tuesday night.

The board unanimously picked George Ellis as its leader during its first meeting of 2012, held at Greenwood Middle School.

DHS worker sues county director

An employee at the Leflore County Department of Human Services is suing the office’s director for allegedly leaving her locked inside a foyer.

The lawsuit alleges Director Dynetha Thornton “falsely imprisoned” Emma Bell for about 30 minutes by refusing to open a door when she knew Bell was trapped inside.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
