County may hire former prison boss to run jail

Leflore County is considering hiring a consultant who is a former superintendent of the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman to help run its jail.

Ed Hargett of Corrections Management Services would receive $4,000 per month for “management and operational consulting,” according to a proposed contract.

Nonprofit aims to spread hope

After a friend took his own life, Brenetta Smith decided to do something to spread hope to those desperately in need of it.

The 2001 Greenwood High School graduate started a nonprofit organization, the Brandon Hope Foundation, earlier this month to that end.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
