District realigns to create middle school

New Leflore County Superintendent Viola Williams-McCaskill is re-aligning some of the district’s schools.

The school board unanimously approved her proposal Thursday to create a middle school at East beginning in 2012-2013.

The new configuration will be:

• Amanda Elzy Elementary, K-5

• East Middle School, 6-8

The Leflore County School Board saw the numbers showing the county has some of the highest rates in Mississippi of teen births and sexually transmitted diseases.

That was enough to convince it to unanimously approve an “abstinence plus” sex education policy Thursday.

Local singer’s ballad to get play on HBO

A song by Mack Allen Smith of Greenwood will be featured in an HBO program airing Sunday night.

The rockabilly singer/songwriter leased the rights to “I’m Not Drunk I’m Just Drinking” to the show “Eastbound and Down.” The episode airs at 9:10 p.m. Sunday.

District prepares for tests

Greenwood public schools are in the stretch run leading up to crucial state tests.

Superintendent Margie Pulley told the school board Tuesday that the district is analyzing data from practice exams taken at the end of the third nine weeks.
