Chamber honors top Leflore Co. students

A big stack of applications on Beth Stevens’ desk showed how hungry students were to win the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce’s Student Achievement Awards.

After a committee spent hours reading them all and conducted personal interviews, eight Leflore County high-schoolers emerged as the winners of the $500 scholarships.

Neighborhood watch group at work in city

A neighborhood watch is trying to cut down on property thefts in northeast Greenwood by immediately sending out email alerts reporting crimes and suspicious activity.

Information the group has provided has netted two or three arrests in the last couple of months, according to founder Christopher McQueen.

The Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure is asking questions about a newspaper article and advertisement that appeared following an armed robbery of Dr. Arnold Smith.

Mickey Boyette, an investigator for the Board of Medical Licensure, visited the managers of The Commonwealth’s advertising and news departments Thursday.

“She loved people, and she loved her community. Really, she was a servant,” said the Rev. James Garner, who served as vice mayor during Mrs. Brown’s first term.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
