A big stack of applications on Beth Stevens’ desk showed how hungry students were to win the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce’s Student Achievement Awards.
After a committee spent hours reading them all and conducted personal interviews, eight Leflore County high-schoolers emerged as the winners of the $500 scholarships.
Those students received their checks and congratulations Thursday evening during a program at the chamber.
The winners are:
• Jasmine Carter, Greenwood High
• Allison Franklin, North New Summit School
• Katie Gregory, Pillow Academy
• Joerick Grice, Amanda Elzy High
• Johnnay Holt, Greenwood High
• Kristen Stephens, Pillow Academy
• Salome Weathers, Leflore County High
• Mia Williams, Leflore County High
Sponsors Viking Range Corp., Milwaukee Electric Tool Co., Double Quick, Dr. V.K. Chawla/Chawla Management, Greenwood Leflore Hospital, 4-Way Electric and Cannon Motor Co. presented students with the checks.
The money can be spent however the students like; however, the chamber encourages them to save it for college.
Lula Moore, committee chair for the annual chamber program, said she walked away impressed from the interviews with the scholarship applicants.
“I was just so drawn in by the outstanding manner in which these students presented themselves,” she said.
Stevens, the chamber’s executive director, said the program is one of her favorites because it recognizes the communty’s future leaders.
