Red Cross aids victims of fatal fire

The Red Cross is helping a Berclair family that lost a child and its home in a fire Sunday night.

Marie Fair, director of the Leflore County Red Cross, said she provided the Pitts family with food and clothing Monday and is arranging for burial assistance today.

A man with a long history of domestic violence is suing the city of Greenwood for $1 million, alleging that officers stomped him, shocked him with a Taser and used Mace on him during a 2009 arrest.

House fire kills 3-year-old boy

A 3-year-old boy perished in a house fire Sunday night in Berclair, and his father suffered severe burns attempting to save him.

Jaylen Pitts died of smoke inhalation, according to Assistant Leflore County Coroner Will Gnemi.

Commencement exercises for Leflore County High School will be noon Saturday at Mississippi Valley State University’s HPER Complex.

Valedictorian Shakeyia Davis said her speech will include encouragement to meet obstacles head-on and overcome them.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
