The Tigers are roaring toward graduation.
Commencement exercises for Leflore County High School will be noon Saturday at Mississippi Valley State University’s HPER Complex.
Valedictorian Shakeyia Davis said her speech will include encouragement to meet obstacles head-on and overcome them.
Davis, the daughter of Cynthia Cooper of Itta Bena and the granddaughter of James and Sarah Cooper of Cruger, earned a 4.17 GPA in high school.
She plans to attend Tougaloo College and major in chemistry with an eye toward eventually becoming a dermatologist.
Davis said she has mixed emotions about leaving her sheltered life with friends and teachers at Leflore but believes she’ll make it OK.
Salutatorian Lakeeta Sanders also spent her entire school career at Leflore County.
“I’ll definitely miss some of the teachers and students because I’ve been around them, the students, my whole life. And I’ll miss the sports, being at the games and cheering on the Tigers,” she said.
Sanders is the daughter of Cassandra Sanders and James Warren. She earned a 4.06 GPA and ran track, finishing second in the state 4x100 relay.
Sanders is going to Jackson State University to major in biomedic engineering.
