Smith renews medical license

Dr. Arnold Smith has renewed his medical license for another year, even as he sits behind bars on murder charges.

It had been set to expire on June 30 but is now extended through June 30, 2013, according to records from the Mississippi Board of Medical Licensure.

New budget won’t require tax increase

The Greenwood School Board is set to pass a $26 million budget for 2012-2013 that won’t require a property tax increase.

The board held a public hearing Tuesday to announce details of the budget and take input prior to its regular meeting. No one from the public attended.

Coke boosts Valley

Four Mississippi Valley State University students will now be receiving extra financial help to become the first in their families to graduate from college.

The Coca-Cola Foundation donated $50,000 Monday to MVSU for first-generation student scholarships.

Supervisors pass $4M bond issue

Leflore County is borrowing $4 million to fix roads and bridges, pay for part of a Viking connector road and make repairs at its jail.

The Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 Monday to sell bonds to finance the work.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
