Mitch Edwards shut down his Main Street muffler business Wednesday and is consolidating it with another shop he owns on U.S. 82.

The reason? He blames construction along the thoroughfare into downtown Greenwood that has restricted traffic and will eventually result in a median dividing the road.

DHS worker appeals in lock-in lawsuit

A Leflore County Department of Human Services worker who alleged false imprisonment on the job isn’t giving up on her lawsuit.

Emma Bell filed noticed in Leflore County Circuit Court Friday that she’s appealing to the Mississippi Supreme Court.

Circuit Judge Richard Smith had dismissed the lawsuit on May 24.

Grocery owners sue city for $12.9M

The owners of a grocery store are suing the city of Greenwood for $12.9 million for allegedly falsely arresting them after they requested trespassers be taken off their property.

Leland Lou, 56, Mae Lou, 73, and Tin S. Lou, 85, filed the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court. They’re represented by attorney Lee Abraham of Greenwood.

Longtime activist Ditto ‘just loved Greenwood’

Just about anything you could do to help a community, Jack Ditto did it for Greenwood.

The longtime insurance agent took an active role in politics, serving as city commissioner and interim mayor, and was active in numerous civic clubs and his church.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
