Hospital hearing Sept. 13

A hearing about the potential sale of Greenwood Leflore Hospital will be held Sept. 13 at the Leflore County Civic Center.

Speakers will be given five minutes at the meeting to express their opinions on whether or not the city and county should sell the 208-bed medical facility.

Top fish farmer Tackett dies at 87

William Tackett started out as a sharecropper but built his way up to being the largest catfish farmer in the world.

Ex-Delta Correctional may house fed inmates

A private company is bidding to house federal prisoners at the shuttered Delta Correctional Facility in Greenwood.

If the deal goes through, it could provide 300 jobs and require Utah-based MTC to build Leflore County a new jail, Chancery Clerk Sam Abraham said Monday.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
