CVB plan for building falls through

A plan for the Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau to spend $150,000 to renovate the Russell Building fell through Friday when not enough board members showed up to a special meeting.

Only three of the Greenwood Tourism Commission’s nine voting members made it: Bill Crump, Marlene Johnson and Kathy Whicker.

$150,000 for Russell building?

The Greenwood Tourism Commission is holding a special meeting Friday to consider spending $150,000 toward renovating the Russell Building downtown.

Action would be required quickly because a bill that passed the Mississippi Legislature Monday forbids the commission from using money on the Russell Building.

Legislature OKs local tourism tax

The Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau will survive for three more years.

The Mississippi Senate and House both approved a conference committee’s report Monday, and the bill reauthorizing the city’s 1 percent tax on dining and lodging that funds the bureau is now awaiting Gov. Haley Barbour’s signature.

District 1 Supervisor Phil Wolfe speaks against renewing the operating agreement for Greenwood-Leflore Airport Monday. However, Wolfe later switched his vote and voted in favor of the agreement, which passed. He said that attempts to change the agreement were clearly being blocked and that it wasn’t good to be stuck in neutral.

It was a bizarre night Monday, even by Leflore County Board of Supervisors’ standards.

First, the board voted against renewing the expired operating agreement for Greenwood-Leflore Airport.

Then it voted down temporarily extending the agreement for supervisors to meet with the Greenwood City Council to make amendments.
