Health clinic to celebrate its opening

A new nonprofit health clinic that aims to provide primary care to uninsured patients will celebrate its grand opening Thursday.

The Leflore County Health Center will hold a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. outside its building at 706 U.S. 82 W. Tours will be conducted, and light refreshments will be served.

Two New York filmmakers are planning to update a 1966 NBC documentary that showed life in segregated Greenwood. They visited Greenwood earlier this month to make preparations and plan to shoot in June. Valedictorian Nicholas Foster intends to become an orthopedic surgeon, and salutatorian Elrica Brown expects to be an anesthesiologist.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
