With less than a week to go until the qualifying deadline, Leflore County’s legislative delegation appears to have an easy path to re-election.
Only one of five has a challenger so far. State Sen. David Jordan, D-Greenwood, will face independent Rogrick Wardell in the Nov. 8 general election.
State Reps. Willie Perkins, D-Greenwood, Linda Whittington, D-Schlater, and Bobby Howell, R-Kilmichael, and state Sen. Lydia Chassaniol, R-Winona, didn’t have opponents as of Wednesday afternoon.
Of course, a lot could still change before the June 1 qualifying deadline.
Republicans and Democrats register with their parties while independents register with the Secretary of State’s office. All three groups are posting qualifiers on their websites. Spokespeople for each said the online lists were up to date Wednesday afternoon.
Jordan said Wednesday night at the Greenwood Voters League that he has always seemed to draw an opponent every election during his long political career, but he said he’s not worried about it because it’s up to the voters to decide who they want. Wardell, a 2009 Democratic candidate for Greenwood mayor, could not be reached for comment this morning.
Mississippi lawmakers failed to agree on a redistricting plan this year, but a federal panel ruled they can run under the current district lines this year.
