Burned-out trash surrounds a garbage box behind Malouf Furniture on U.S. 82 Saturday afternoon following a fire early Saturday morning. Arsonists hit four other garbage bins in the area that night. It’s the fifth time the arsonists have set strings of fires in North Greenwood since March.

Arsonists torch 5 more garbage bins

Greenwood’s garbage box-charring arsonists have struck again.

The Fire Department put out five garbage box fires within an hour late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

It’s the fifth string of suspicious fires since the beginning of March in the West Park Avenue area.

A devoted group of volunteers met nearly every week for more than three years with a simple goal: Open a medical clinic in Greenwood to treat anyone who walked through the door.

After overcoming stumbling blocks — and giving out of their own pockets — they have finally seen their dream realized in the Leflore County Health Center.

In 10 weeks, Morgan Cannon, Cody Nance and Holly Ann Pannell turned a theoretical $100,000 into $143,735.

That was good enough for first place out of more than 700 school teams throughout Mississippi.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
