Lawyer: Deputies shot for no reason

Tourism board ad assistance deadline nears

Groups looking for grants to help promote their events have until July 29 to apply for the Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau’s advertising assistance program.

The program is designed to promote tourism in Greenwood by paying for advertising for events with the goal that they will eventually become self-supporting.

Man pleads guilty in stabbing

A yard man pleaded guilty Monday in Leflore County Circuit Court to stabbing and robbing an elderly North Greenwood woman.

Charlie Smith Jr., 40, received 30 years to serve on charges of aggravated assault and armed robbery.

He also will serve the rest of a 2007 sentence for uttering forgery after having his parole revoked.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
